The National Geographic Society has bestowed a rare honor on Nainoa Thompson, the chief navigator of the Hokule’a and the president of the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
On Thursday, the Society awarded Thompson its highest honor, The Hubbard Medal, at a meeting of the 2016 Explorer Awards in Washington, D.C.
When the voyaging canoe Hokule’a finishes its Malama Honua Worldwide journey in 2017, it would have visited 100 ports, 27 nations, and 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
