A nice essay from reporter Mileka Lincoln on what goes on behind the scences to support the Malama Honua worldwide voyage of the canoe Hokule’a.

Lincoln says “meticulous preparing and planning” have gone into the first 24,000 miles of the worldwide journey, with more than 160 volunteers serving as crew members and Hawaiian Airline flying gear and support personnel “to the far corners of the globe.”

The voyage is more than just an attempt to circumnavigate the Earth–it’s a program known as “Malama Honua”–caring for Island Earth. The journey “entails an educational outreach to spread the message of caring and protecting the elements of the planet…”

Hokule’a will leave New York City on Father’s Day, bound for Maine and Nova Scotia.
