After a three-day visit to Charleston, South Carolina, the ocean voyaging canoe Hokule’a left the harbor Sunday morning, leaving behind the vision of “Malama Honua”–caring for island Earth.
During the brief stay, crew members exchanged stories, knowledge, and cultural traditions with Native Americans, former Hawaii residents, and the general public who learned of the voyage through local news media. The Hokule’a crew also presented classes on celestial navigation and Hawaiian culture at a local educational resource center.
