Crew members of the ocean-voyaging canoe Hokule’a celebrated Kamehameha Day a bit early soon after the canoe docked Sunday at the Washington Canoe Club near the nation’s Capitol. The early ceremony drew a large crowd from the Hawaii State Society, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Hawaii’s congressional delegation, and community leaders as crewmembers draped lei on the statues of King Kamehameha I and Father Damien at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. During its brief stay in Washington, D.C. the Hokule’a will host educational tours and other events as part of the “Malama Honua” voyage around the world.
